What Classes Can I Take in 8th Grade?
8th Grade Plan of Study
Each eighth grade student’s schedule will consist of an eight period day. The order in which the classes are arranged will vary among students. Five essential classes plus PE/Health are required, but some elective courses will be selected with your input! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves! Let’s start with the classes that all 8th graders have to take. Below is a list of the 8th grade required subjects and a description of each class so you’ll know what you can expect to learn in each.

Description:

Advisory is a fifteen-minute daily meeting time at the beginning of your day. Advisory serves as a home base for you, offering you the opportunity to review the personal, social, academic and study skills introduced and developed in the 6th and 7th grade programs. This year an additional focus will be placed on career awareness.

This subject area emphasizes the development of communications skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking, and information literacy. You will develop and apply skills and strategies to comprehend, analyze, and evaluate both fiction and non-fiction from a variety of cultures and times, as well as applying a writing process to compose well-developed text in both fiction and non-fiction forms.

This year you will study the development of the United States as a strong and free nation beginning with the exploration and settlement of North America through the colonial period ending with the Civil War. You will analyze historical events that led to the development of American ideals of civil liberties, rights and responsibilities as guaranteed by constitutional law. An emphasis will be on the social history and economic development of the country including cultural dimensions of the American Experience. In the end you will hopefully gain a greater understanding of your heritage and citizenship responsibilities. |

This class emphasizes inquiry-based learning, which means that this class offers labs and activities to expand and apply your understanding of the material, followed by questions and discussions to construct meaning. Description:

During this class you will learn the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Topics that we will cover include conflict resolution, alcohol and tobacco, abuse prevention. Our aim is to make you aware of how negative choices can affect your life in a negative way. |
After looking at your required courses, this leaves three semesters to fill in with electives or classes you want to take because you think they would be fun and interesting. You might take one year-long elective plus one semester elective OR you might even decide to take three different semester electives. Whichever way you choose to fill your day, the total number of semesters that need to be filled is three.

Eighth grade band is a year-long class which is a continuation of seventh grade band. In this class we continue to develop your musical skills in preparation for entry into the high school program as well as participation in pep band, performing at school assemblies, and participating in district honor bands. |

The Discovery class is designed as a challenging elective for those students who have been identified as gifted learners. It can be taken for one or both semesters. This class will emphasize higher level thinking and problem solving while strengthening communication skills. Students will be challenged with material that is above grade level and will have input on the topics covered. In addition, students will complete a college and career planning unit second semester.

The goal of this course is to strengthen the pre-existing skills, talents and design applications learned up to this point. You will be expected to use, know and apply much of what you have learned from past art experiences. Projects will include: supersized super heroes, kinetic sculptures, painting the art room, printing, and transforming a vehicle into an “art car” with original designs and paint. (lab fee required)

This course is offered as a developmental study into the world of jazz. Exercise and Fitness is a class that is designed to create interest in life-long physical fitness. The objective of this class is to provide opportunities for students to see various forms of exercise. Some exercises that we do are weight training, endurance training, plyo-metric training, core training, and speed and agility training. Students take pre-tests at the beginning of the semester and post-tests at the end of the semester to evaluate the improvements that have been made. At the conclusion of the semester you should understand the positive effects that exercise can produce.
