Kindergarten Promotional Criteria
Students will be expected to successfully perform the following communication arts skills, to be ready for first grade:
• Know directionality (where to start reading, left to right sweep, return sweep to the left)
• Discriminate between letters and words
• Identify and differentiate between capital and lowercase letters
• Recognize own name in print
• Identify rhyming words
• Clap out syllables to make a word
• Blend sounds to make a word
• Identify location of a given sound in a word (beginning & end)
• Identify beginning sounds
• Identify phonemes in words
• Recognize 20 high frequency sight words in print
• Recognize consonants and produce sounds
• Demonstrate appropriate listening behavior (have eye contact with speaker, use good posture, don’t create distractions)
• Follow two-step directions
• Participate in discussions to explain/clarify ideas, experiences, opinions, and give reasons.
• Understand directionality concepts (top-bottom)
• Form capital and lowercase letters correctly
• Print first name correctly
Students will be expected to successfully perform the following math skills to be ready for first grade:
• Use concrete, pictorial and symbolic
representations of whole numbers 0 to 20 and the
fraction one half.
• Use and understand properties of the whole number system at the concrete and pictorial level (1 to 1 correspondence)
• Rote count to 30
• Identify, name and sort geometric shapes (rectangle, triangle, circle, square, diamond and oval) using attributes of shape, size and color
• Describe data at the concrete and pictorial levels using the words more, less and equal
• Recognize, create and expand patterns of objects
• Form numerals 0-9 correctly
