The Warren County R-III community, like those around the world, is grieving the senseless death of George Floyd. Racism, inequality, and violence in our communities and nation are unacceptable, and we know this tragic incident is symptomatic of a larger issue that affects us all.

Racism and violence are in opposition to the values of our district, our community, and society, and the Warren County R-III School District condemns these behaviors in the strongest terms possible.

Warren County R-III is committed to continuing our mission of equipping and empowering each child to fully reach his or her potential as a lifelong learner, responsible adult, and contributing member of a diverse society. As educators, we are working to break down barriers and create opportunities for our students who have historically been underserved, and we pray that the future brings an inclusive and welcoming society free from racism and violence.

We know that our students and community members are experiencing these events in different ways. Whether they are watching it on television or actively participating in peaceful protests, they have been witnessing racially-fueled violence. Our students are smart and passionate, and they are capable of talking about difficult topics with their peers and parents while school is not in session.

As we continue on our diversity journey here in Warren County, we have initiatives to provide professional development for our staff around trauma-informed and restorative discipline. While there are many things we are doing to eliminate racism and bigotry, there will always be room for more. We pledge to continue these efforts for the benefit of all of our students and staff.

As part of our district values, we honor and encourage trust, respect, and inclusiveness. It is our fervent hope that our students and our entire community find these principles to be a useful guide as we all navigate and respond to these tragic events and channel our energy, intellect, passion, and commitment to be forces for good and for positive change.
